The Satin Silk Pillowcase

Why sleep on silk?

The benefits of this noble fabric have been known since antiquity. Naturally thermoregulating, silk has antibacterial properties and helps smooth the skin while preventing hair breakage.
Restful sleep is already essential for our well-being, so having a silk pillowcase that takes care of your skin at night makes it even better, doesn’t it?

We offer you an easy tutorial to sew this delicate pillowcase, perfect to give as a gift or to treat yourself !

Materials

For this tutorial, you will need:
  • One piece of satin silk fabric 70 × 150cm (the fabric weight that is recommended is 90-130g/m2)
  • Polyester thread
  • A microtex needle (70 or 75)
  • A box of fine pins

Step 1: Assembly

Cut the pillowcase to the dimensions provided below. To trace the lines, use tailor’s chalk to avoid damaging the fabric. Cut with sharp scissors.

Step 2: Prepare the interior

Press the fabric with an iron. Fold the fabric 15 cm from the edge to form the flap. Then, create a double hem of 2 cm at the bottom of the flap (4 cm total).

Topstitch the hem using a 3-3.5 mm stitch length.

Step 3: Sew the pillowcase

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, without including the flap, to form the front and back of the pillowcase. Sew French seams on the sides: place the front and back wrong sides together (the flap should remain folded on the back of the silk), stitch 7 mm from the edge, then trim the seam allowance to 3–4 mm.

Turn the piece inside out so the right sides are together. Press the seam, then sew again 7 mm from the fold to enclose the raw edges.

Press your work at a low temperature.

Congratulations, your Satin Silk Pillowcase is finished!
